Job Summary
The Statewide Master Person Index (MPI) is a resource for uniquely identifying individuals who receive healthcare or public health services within Utah. Funded by a Grand Opportunities grant from the National Institutes of Health, the Statewide MPI will allow researchers to link individual records from various institutions in order to more completely and accurately ascertain health status and service use. The MPI will also serve as an important component of health care and public health delivery as part of Utah's clinical health information exchange initiative.

Overview:
The Data Architect (DA) is responsible for the development of logical and physical data models for the MPI repository. The DA is also expected to handle some aspects of database management for the repository, including installing DB software, creating schemas, tables and other DB artifacts, and granting permissions to the DB. This position reports to the grant's principal investigator in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Utah. The position works with a team of other technical personnel and subject matter experts. This position also involves working with grant co-investigators at the University of Utah and partner institutions. In addition to the Statewide MPI project, the DA will have similar, concurrent responsibilities on related projects in Biomedical Informatics and in the Office of the Assistant Vice President for Health Sciences IT.

Duties:

Design, specification, development, and deployment of data models that are part of the MPI infrastructure and other related Informatics projects, including the analysis and translation of requirements specified by the subject matter experts into practical specifications and processes;
Establish and maintain the MPI repository DB environment (and other related DB environments) according to current and best practices;
Estimate development schedules and assist with the planning and execution of projects;
Ensure that all DB repositories are reasonably free from defects, compliant with standards, easy to maintain, and properly documented;
Assist with integration testing of the repository with associated software;
Provide support to other team members and users in the use of the data models and repository environment;
Assist with the definition, development, and/or deployment of third party tools and service

Qualifications:

Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Informatics, or related field, or 8 years of relevant experience. Excellent analytical, testing, and problem solving skills - able to grasp functional concepts quickly and attentive to detail. Must be self-motivated and have a creative and innovative mindset. Excellent verbal and written communication skills essential, including the ability to exchange ideas with non-technical stakeholders (e.g., biomedical researchers, clinicians). Must be able to elicit information (knowledge acquisition) from subject matter experts.

Ability to work independently and also collaboratively in a team environment; at least 5 years of practical experience as a data architect, preferably applied to a biomedical domain; experience with database management responsibilities required.

Must have practical and quantifiable experience in aspects of software development, including hands-on experience with the design, specification, programming, testing, regression testing, deployment, and maintenance of commercial grade software applications.

Good working knowledge of object-oriented analysis, design, and programming, particularly in Java or C/C++, including data modeling and data persistence (ORM) mechanisms; experience with Oracle 10g/11g required. Also prefer applicants with experience in MySQL and Postgres.

Must have experience with stored procedures and use of PL/SQL. Experience working in Unix/Linux environment.
