Description:

The University of Utah’s John A. Moran Eye Center Hageman Lab has an immediate need for an experienced Morphologist/Microscopist.

Duties:

Directs the daily operation of the lab including hiring and training subordinates. Prepares, operates and maintains laboratory and experimental testing equipment. Assesses the validity of data and interprets results; devises, refines and implements new techniques or modifies existing processes by utilizing advanced knowledge. May coauthor research papers and publications. May represent the University by presenting research and findings to peers at conventions and conferences.

Conducts and trains personnel in the following techniques: acquisition and processing of human donor eyes for light microscopy (immunohistochemistry, histochemistry, in situ hybridization), laser scanning confocal microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (routine, immunohistochemistry, freeze fracture) and scanning electron microscopy; ultramicrotomy; photography; equipment maintenance; recording lab data; maintaining supply inventories; and interfacing with Mcintosh computers. Experience with, or demonstrable exposure to these techniques and procedures is required.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in an appropriate scientific discipline plus four years of related full-time lab experience, or equivalency. A Master's Degree plus lab experience obtained through internships and study-related part-time work assignments may be substituted for the lab experience requirement.

Requires the practical or academic knowledge of advanced morphological techniques, including electron and confocal microscopy, plus an ability to translate, adapt and apply this knowledge that is generally associated with a Bachelor's degree, or a certificate and experience in electron microscopy, supplemented with one or more years of progressive responsibility or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
