Job summary

AWS DataSync makes it easy for customers to quickly and securely move their data to and from the AWS cloud. Every day, DataSync moves millions of files and petabytes of data, accelerating customer data migrations and data transfer workflows. With DataSync, customers can easily migrate or replicate large data sets without having to build custom solutions or manage repetitive tasks.

We are looking for a Software Development Manager to play a leadership role on our growing service and to help build out a development team located along the Utah Wasatch Front. Come join the AWS DataSync team as we make moving data ridiculously easy for AWS customers!

Key job responsibilities

  • End to end ownership of projects. You will be responsible to allocate technical resources, define project milestones, and work with product managers to define the customer experience
  • Foster career growth and a strong team culture
  • Recruit, hire, mentor, and manage teams of software engineers
  • Make long term org design decisions, architectural decisions
  • Interface with external and internal customers to understand requirements, set priorities, and communicate direction and progress
  • Help develop long-term business and technology strategies
  • Drive improvements in software engineering practices

The AWS DataSync team is principally located in Boston, Seattle, (and soon to be Lehi!) with a number of team members located remotely. To achieve our goals, we work and deliver together as a team, supporting and challenging each other in both the development and operation of the service. Our team puts a high value on work-life balance. We recognize that some developers work best outside of standard office environments and we support remote work while offering many opportunities for face-to-face interaction, both online and in the office.

Basic Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience working directly within engineering teams
  • Experience partnering with product OR program management teams
  • 3+ years of people management experience, managing engineers
  • 3+ years of experience architecting and designing (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and current systems
  • 6+ years of software development experience
  • 6+ years of experience as a development leader or manager building and leading strong engineering teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Deep hands-on technical expertise; prior experience as a software developer or software development manager preferred
  • Solid software development background including design patterns, data structures, test driven development
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • A deep understanding of the software development lifecycle, and a track record of shipping software on time
  • A passion for people management and mentorship
  • Passion for technical leadership and mentoring
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Effective analytical skills, with problem solving abilities in the face of ambiguity
  • Ability to collaborate with a talented, diverse team
