The person in this position will work on a variety of engineering projects,with a focus on dam engineering for power,mining,industrial,and public clients primarily in the U.S. Work entails dam engineering and design; collaboration with structural,geotechnical,hydrology,and hydraulics experts; site inspections; quality assurance; construction support; and risk analysis. Typical projects include hydroelectric facilities and other impoundments,such as tailings storage facilities,coal ash ponds,reservoirs,levees,and canals. The person in this position will help lead our geotechnical engineers' growing dam practice area,provide mentoring and leadership within the company and industry,and increase awareness of Barr's brand and services in the dams community. The position requires periodic out-of-town assignments with an estimated 20 to 40% travel. Salt Lake City or Denver is the preferred office alignment for this position,but other locations will be considered.
+ Bachelor's degree in civil engineering
+ 15 years of relevant work experience with dam engineering and risk assessments
+ Professional engineer (PE) certification or ability to obtain certification within 1 year
+ Broad knowledge of and experience with civil engineering and design codes,standards,guidelines,and best practices to complete complex dam evaluation,design,and construction projects
+ Experience with established dam safety programs,including Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Part 12 dam safety program requirements (engineering guidelines,supporting technical information documents (STIDs),probable maximum precipitation (PMP)/probable maximum flood (PMF),emergency action plans (EAPs),potential failure modes analyses (PFMAs),dam safety surveillance monitoring plans (DSSMPs),Owner's Dam Safety Program (ODSP),risk-informed decision making (RIDM),etc.) or similar dams safety programs for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers,Bureau of Land Management,Federal Emergency Management Agency,and/or states/provinces
+ Facilitation experience with PFMAs/failure modes and effects analyses (FMEAs)
+ Experience performing probability and consequence analysis for qualitative risk assessments
+ Demonstrated understanding of the consulting profession,including flexibility and willingness to modify personal schedule as required to meet project deadlines and/or client needs
+ Proven experience collaborating and maintaining relationships across offices
+ Willingness to travel to support project needs
+ Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing 30 pounds or more
+ Computer skills,including word processing and spreadsheet creation
+ Strong oral and written communication skills
+ Legal authorization to work in the U.S. without the need for sponsorship
+ Acceptable driving record
+ Graduate degree in civil or geotechnical engineering with additional coursework or research related to geotechnical or dam engineering
+ 20+ years of analysis and design experience,including inspecting concrete and earthen dams and/or levees,especially related to dam repair and rehabilitation
+ Prior approval as an independent consultant to complete FERC Part 12 dam safety inspections
+ Interest in and ability to perform project execution and management,business development,and staff mentoring
+ Facilitation experience with qualitative and quantitative dam risk assessments
+ Computer skills and work experience in statistical analysis software or risk analysis software (@Risk or similar)
NOTE: Some work locations may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and may require entering and working in facilities that include limited accessibility,moving machinery,and other conditions characteristic of industrial facilities. Assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. An OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required. Safety training will be provided. Applicants may be asked to participate in a drug screening program at the request of specific clients.
